About Us

The Rotary Club of Klang is a traditional club having existed for almost a hundred years. In 2030 we will be celebrating our Centenary. Our membership consists of a mixture of young and old members ranging from early 20s to mid 80s. Our 27 members are energetic when it comes to projects and fellowships. Among our numbers, we have business leaders, professionals, retirees, etc., etc. Many don't believe that we have members ranging from techies to Tan Sri's and Execs to ex Ministers. Financially our members range from startups to billionaires. Fundraising is never a problem when the need is deserving. Like all senior Rotary Clubs, we have a good check and balance on our activities. Of late, the young presidents have taken the club to a higher level. Our participation at district events is at our best. Our fellowship is well structured and is second to none. This improves our attendance at meetings, projects, and district events. After event, parties are well patronised. Not everyone drinks, but they stay on to enjoy the company. Be it singing or dancing, the club leaders take to the floor like fish to water. This Rotary Club has never been better, and we look forward to greater times in the coming years. Every year gets better and better, and hopefully, we climax at our Centenary, where the doyen of our Club will take the chair in his late 80s.

HISTORY

The Rotary Club of Klang is one of the oldest clubs in the country, the 4th to be chartered in Federal Malay State. Almon E. Roth, President Rotary International, and Chesley R. Perry signed the charter for the club under the name of Klang & Coast Rotary Club on 8th August 1930. The 1st President installed was Dr. W Ansley Young and Vice President was Mr. Goh Hock Huat.

Like other clubs in the country, the club was discontinued due to the Second World War, between 1942-1945. Though many other Rotary Clubs were resumed from 1946 onwards, it was not till 1961 that Rotary Club was revived in Klang.

A 2nd charter was issued in the name of Klang and Port Swettenham Rotary Club on 14th September 1961. Dato Eu Eng Hock, a well-known businessman in Klang, was installed as the President of the new club on 18th November 1961 at a distinguished gathering of community leaders.

With the passage of time, the name of Port Swettenham was dropped in favor of Port Klang. The name of the club was changed to Rotary Club of Klang to reflect its wide territorial area in the Klang Valley, including Port Klang. The new charter of the club was issued on 3rd August 1972, signed by President of Rotary International, Roy D Hickman and Secretary Harry A Stewart.
